Nellis Small Arms Range Annex

The Nellis Small Arms Range Annex Formerly Used Defense Site or FUDS is located north of Highway 215, in Clark County, Nevada. The property is situated to the north and west of the active Nellis Air Force Base Small Arms Range.

In 1941, approximately 46,953 acres of land in Clark County were acquired from the U.S. Department of Interior to establish a moving target machine gun range, which was used to train aerial gunners. After the war, the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy used the area as a small arms range. The site also served as an emergency drop site for pylons, hung bombs and wing-tip tanks. A portion of site has been identified as an explosive ordnance disposal area.

A certificate of clearance was issued in 1953 for 26,000 acres of the range. In 1954, 25,620 acres were transferred to the Bureau of Land Management, and in 1961, 10,758 acres were transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Large amounts of munitions were removed and disposed of during subsequent range clearance activities conducted in 1972, 1977, 1978 and 1995.

Today, the Nellis Small Arms Range Annex consists of undeveloped land that is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, and is used for recreation and wildlife management interests.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began investigating the former range in 1994 through the FUDS Program. Since that time, subsequent investigations have identified munitions debris and munitions and explosives of concern on the former range. Based on the findings of the 2006 Site Inspection Report, further investigations for munitions and explosives of concern is recommended for the Nellis Small Arms Range Annex.  In 2016, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began investigating a smaller section of the range annex as a separate project.  The area is identified as the University of Nevada - Las Vegas (UNLV) Study Area.
