U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Park Ranger Nick Figueroa greets volunteers before providing them with a safety brief at a clean-up event during National Public Lands Day Sept. 28 at Whittier Narrows Nature Center in South El Monte, California. More than 100 volunteers picked up trash and debris along a stretch of the riverbed from the nature center to the Whittier Narrows Dam's San Gabriel spillway. The debris consisted of shoes, shredded clothing, shopping carts, tires, plastic bottles and miscellaneous trash, totaling about 6,500 pounds.
