General Information
Los Angeles Harbor is located in Los Angeles County, approximately 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors are two independent commercial ports within San Pedro Bay. Communities surrounding the LA harbor complex include San Pedro, Wilmington and Long Beach. The Port of Los Angeles is one of the largest throughput of containerized cargo in the United States. Significant intermodal transportation improvements have been made in recent years such as Pier 400 and the Alameda Corridor. These improvements to port infrastructure will allow further increases in cargo volume and ship traffic in the harbor.
Los Angeles Harbor is a semi-enclosed coastal embayment. Three stone breakwaters extend along the 50-foot bottom contour, marking the seaward limits of Los Angeles Harbor. Multiple landfills have been constructed between these breakwaters and Terminal Island.
