Fact Sheet

Construction - Santa Maria River Levees, CA

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District
Published April 14, 2023

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION:
The Santa Maria River Levee is located approximately 160 miles north of the city of Los Angeles in Santa Barbara County, California. The original levee project, constructed in 1963 by the Corps of Engineers was for the protection of the city of Santa Maria and the surrounding area. The levee is currently being maintained by the Santa Barbara County Flood Control and Water Conservation District.

AUTHORIZATION: Flood Control Act of 1938, 1954 Flood Control Act

ACTIVITIES FOR FY 2023: Complete Bradley Canyon Operation and Maintenance, O&M, manual.

FY24 PLANNED ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Complete project closeout.

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION: The original Corps levee was completed in 1963. Since construction, the levee sustained considerable damage several times from low to moderate floods, including a complete breach in 1998 that inundated adjacent agricultural lands. The project was modified by the Corps in 1983 by constructing a series of structures called groins that project out from the levee and deflect the erosive cross-river flows away. The remainder of the project was left unmodified, and therefore, vulnerable to failure from undercutting. Reaches 1, 2, and 3 and the Bradley Canyon lever have been improved to provide designed level of flood risk reduction. Reach 1, 2, and 3 are complete and the Bradley Canyon O&M manual is being prepared for official O&M by the non-Federal sponsor.
