LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION:
Port Hueneme is in Ventura County, about 65 miles NW of Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbors and about 1-mile SE of Channel Islands Harbor, in the City of Port Hueneme. The harbor is used as a deep draft commercial port supporting offshore oil platforms, bulk freighters, naval ships, and car transporters. It serves international businesses and ocean carriers from the Pacific Rim and Europe. The Port of Hueneme ranks among the top seaports in California for general cargo throughput. The niche markets that Port Hueneme serves include the import and export of automobiles, fresh fruit, and produce. Its unique positioning near the Santa Barbara Channel has also made the Port of Hueneme the primary support facility for the offshore oil industry. The port is also home to Navy Base Ventura County. The Entrance Channel was site operational in 1939, fully operational in 1940. The project condition is good. The US Navy provides 19% of dredging costs.
