Investigations - Port of Long Beach Navigation Improvements, CA

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION:
The Port of Long Beach, the second busiest US seaport, is in Southern California, approximately 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Navigation improvements to the Port are required for safety in maneuvering and to accommodate the current container vessel and liquid bulk fleet.- Deepening the Approach Channel from -76 feet to -80 feet [turquoise area]
- Bend easing portions of the Main Channel to -76 feet [red area]
- Deepening portions of the West Basin from -50 to -55 feet [yellow area]
- Constructing the Pier J South Approach Channel and Turning Basin from -50 to -55 feet [orange area]
- Construction of an electric substation to mitigate air quality impacts within the harbor complex
Dredged material will be placed in two (2) USEPA-designated open ocean disposal sites (LA-2, LA-3) and a nearshore placement site approximately 5.5 miles East of Pier J South. Further opportunities for beneficial reuse of dredged materials will be evaluated during PED.

AUTHORIZATION: Water Resources Development Act of 1986, Section 216 River and Harbors Act of 1970, House Resolution 2768.

ACTIVITIES FOR FY 2023: IIJA Funds will be used to execute a design agreement and start Preconstruction, Engineering and Design (PED) phase.

IIJA ACTIVITIES: Execute a design agreement and complete design.

FY 2024 PLANNED ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Planned carryover funds will be used to continue the Preconstruction, Engineering and Design (PED) phase.
