Fact Sheet

Investigations - Rio Salado Oeste, AZ

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District
Published April 17, 2023

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION: The potential project area is located entirely within the City of Phoenix, along eight miles of the Salt River, from 19th Avenue to 83rd Avenue, downstream (West or Oeste) of the on-going Rio Salado project and upstream of the Tres Rios Project. The recommended plan includes restoration of nearly 1,500 acres of riparian and flood plain habitat with recreation and incidental flood damage reduction.

AUTHORIZATION: Flood Control Act of 1938, Sec 6 (Gila River & Tributaries, AZ & NM) 28 Jun 38, HR 2425 dated 17 May 1994; Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 2007, Sec 1001 (5).

ACTIVITIES FOR FY 2023: Workplan funds will be used to coordinate and negotiate a Feasibility Cost Share Agreement (FCSA) with the sponsor (City of Phoenix).

FY2024 PLANNED ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Funds will be used to Execute an FCSA and initiate a General Re-evaluation Report (GRR).

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION: This project is a high priority for the Non-Federal Sponsor. The project was not approved for annual budgeting   due to its focus on upland vegetation restoration. The sponsor is willing to refocus project efforts on aquatic ecosystem restoration opportunities and shift project recommendation away from the more upland riparian vegetation components of the authorized project.
