    To improve the health of the San Gabriel River and reduce risk to the public, including those illegally camping within the riverbed, the Los Angeles District cleared trash and floatable debris throughout most of December from a stretch of riverbed near Azusa, California.

    Corps removes 144 tons of debris from San Gabriel River

    In a continuing project to improve the health of the San Gabriel River and reduce risk to the public, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District cleared 144 tons of litter and debris, March 6-13, from a stretch of riverbed near Azusa.

    Corps river and creek cleanup project removes 575 tons of debris

    Work began daybreak on Sept. 27 in San Jose Creek. Contractors hauled trash, shopping carts, bundles of Arundo donax reeds used to build campsites, abandoned vehicles, propane tanks and gasoline cans from abandoned illegal campsites. Scores of big dumpsters were filled and refilled until the last semi pulled away.

    Partnership was the keyword Oct. 8 as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District teamed up with the California Army National Guard for a flood-control exercise at the Whittier Narrows Dam Basin.

    Forming San Gabriel River clean up plans

    A meeting was held Oct. 21 in the Duarte Historical Museum near the Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale, California, to discuss the complex issue of cleaning up the San Gabriel River before the rainy season gets here.
