U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District
Published March 22, 2023
Updated: March 21, 2023

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
Project consists of channel improvements to Lower LA, Rio Hondo Rivers and Compton Creek. Modifying/replacing as many as 25 bridges necessitated by channel improvements. Project will protect 464,000 of 500,000 residents in basin wide 133-yr floodplain. It will reduce basin wide 133-year floodplain from 52,000 to 3,800 ac (93% reduction). Los Angeles County population has increased to more than 8.7M.  The ability of the existing flood control system to provide the design-level of protection has diminished. Increased flood flows, resulting from the impervious cover in watershed, causing increased runoff, loss of groundwater recharge and associate increase in flow from additional storm drains.
