    LA District Park Rangers Annel Montsalvo, left, and Linda C. Babcock, hand out information to a family participating in Los Angeles County’s Overnight Family Camping and Fishing Sept. 26 at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in Montebello, California. Montsalvo and other LA District park rangers used the event as an opportunity to educate members of the public on topics such as water safety, environmental stewardship and flood preparedness as part of National Public Lands Day.

    This year presented unique challenges to federal agencies looking to engage the public in participating in National Public Lands Day, but U.S. Army Corps of Engineers districts were able to adapt using virtual and in-person outreach events with COVID-19 safety precautions in place.

    From Army Corps to Peace Corps and back

    Patricia Fontanet, a water resources planner with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, decided to put her Corps of Engineers-acquired skills to work in helping the people of La Trinidad, Philippines. She recently took on a seven-month assignment with the Peace Corps, working on projects such as developing a flood study, teaching disaster preparedness at elementary schools, and much more.

    Mary Spencer, former Small Business Program manager, is inducted into the Los Angeles District's Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony at the District headquarters in Los Angeles March 23. The induction was held in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted two retired employees into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony at the District headquarters in Los Angeles March 23.

    Brig. Gen. Mark Toy, commanding general of the USACE South Pacific Division and Don Knabe, Los Angeles County supervisor, presented a scroll to Ron Weiss, a former USACE employee who worked on the marina since its beginning in the 1950s at a ceremony April 10. USACE workers were recognized at Marina del Rey's 50th Birthday Bash for the design and work efforts in taking and keeping Marina del Rey from the duck hunting marsh it was into the marina it is today.

    Amidst the tall ships’ cannon battle and sword fights at Marina del Rey April 10, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped celebrate a 50th Birthday Bash.

    Temporary Housing Planning and Response Teams from across the U.S. inspect a site in Los Angeles for a possible temporary housing site if needed for an emergency. The District’s Emergency Management office here hosted the biannual training for six USACE Temporary Housing Planning and Response Teams from March 8 to March 12. The teams that shared in the training came from Huntsville, Saint Paul, Huntington, Jacksonville, New York and the Los Angeles Districts.

    During times of disasters, many families, emergency responders and offices find themselves displaced with no place to hang their hats and the Federal Emergency Management Agency works with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers housing teams to shelter them.
