    Corps completes Fort Irwin water treatment plant

    Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment Katherine Hammack joined U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Pacific Division Commander Col. Pete Helmlinger, Los Angeles District Commander Col. Kirk Gibbs and Fort Irwin and the National Training Center senior leaders in a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion and operation of the new Fort Irwin water treatment plant, also known as the Irwin Water Works. The ceremony was held in front of the IWW Control Building at Fort Irwin, California Oct. 13.
  • The phase separator of the mechanical evaporator located on the right of side of the photo is the third stage of the purification process. The project is the design-build of a six million gallon per day water treatment plant. The new plant will use a three-stage, electro-dialysis reversal (EDR) water treatment plant that treats all contaminants found in Fort Irwin's ground water in accordance with federal and state requirements. The plant will include: an electro-dialysis reversal (EDR) primary treatment, lime softening clarifiers, lime solids thickeners, lime sludge lagoons, reverse osmosis (RO) filters, brine treatment facility, concentrate equalization basins and a mechanical evaporator tower and feed tank, and three evaporation ponds to achieve the post’s 99 percent water recovery rate. The project also includes water system improvement and supporting utilities and infrastructure upgrades

    Fort Irwin water treatment plant reaches construction milestone

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Corps contractor CDM Constructors, Inc., of Rancho Cucamonga have reached a critical milestone in the construction of the new Fort Irwin Water Treatment Plant as it began to transition to the plants commissioning phase in September.

    The dredging project deepened the federal channel north of Oceanside Pier and filled the beach adjacent to the pier with fresh, uncontaminated sand.

    Annual dredging project no small task for district

    As far as dredging projects go, the one conducted from mid to late April at Oceanside Harbor seems pretty simple. “The project entails dredging sand out of the federal navigation channel at Oceanside Harbor and placing it on a downcoast beach,” said Scott John, the project manager. “Sand accretes naturally in the harbor entrance and it needs to be dredged out on an annual basis.”

    The water contained and released from Alamo Dam by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, which entered an innovative partnership with state and federal agencies in the 1990s, helps maintain a state park which hosts thousands of visitors every year and sustain 50 miles of downstream riparian habitat along the Bill Williams River all the way to the Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge. The Corps manages nearly twelve million acres of water across the country and is consistently seeking innovative and environmentally sustainable solutions to the nation's water resources challenges to help strengthen the nation.

    LA District continues innovative partnership

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District has helped develop a strong partnership at Alamo Dam and along the Bill Williams River to continue sustaining our nation’s economic and water resources. Through the collaboration, known as the Bill Williams River Corridor Steering Committee, with other government agencies and partners, the Corps ensured the flows from Alamo Dam maximized taxpayer dollars by maintaining a high level of sustainability for a variety of communities.

    USACE Environmental chief visits southern Arizona

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District hosted Dr. Christine Altendorf, the USACE Environmental Division chief during a two-day visit Aug. 29-30 to the southern Arizona area. Her visit focused on sustainable projects by the District and other agencies on and around military and federal properties.
