    LA District FUDS team makes progress on Nellis Remedial Action projects

    Representatives with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District hosted a public meeting to discuss a Formerly Used Defense Site, or FUDS, project with Clark County residents July 25 at the Aliante Library in Las Vegas.

    District partners with Tohono O’odham Nation to promote explosives safety

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District partnered with the Environmental Protection Office of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a federally-recognized tribe, in November 2018 to plan age-appropriate 3Rs (Recognize, Retreat, Report) of Explosives Safety awareness information for schools on the nation located within the Sonoran Desert in south central Arizona.

The site includes about 284 residential properties and parcels, located on Tommie Drive, East Packard, Lass, East Snavely, East Thompson, East Lum, East Ryan, East Hearne, East Devlin, East Shaeffer, East John L and Northfield avenues.

    Corps hosts open house on former range

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District hosted an open house Aug. 20 to discuss an upcoming remedial investigation and feasibility study of a former ground-to-ground gunnery range.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District begin a remedial investigation and feasibility study July 13 at the former Sahuarita Air Force Range in Pima County, Arizona. Kyle Lindsay, a geophysicist from the Sacramento District and Sara Benovic, a project manager with the State of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Federal Projects Team, discuss the RI/FS that will investigate more than 10,000 acres using digital geophysical mapping. Airmen from Davis-Monthan in Tucson used the site from 1943 to 1958 for bombing and gunnery training.

    RI/FS underway at Sahuarita Air Force Range

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District began a remedial investigation and feasibility study July 13 at the former Sahuarita Air Force Range in Pima County, Arizona. SAFR is a Formerly Used Defense Site of approximately 27,000 acres. Airmen from Davis-Monthan in Tucson used the site from 1943 to 1958 for bombing and gunnery training.
  • The Kirtland Demolition Bombing Range is extremely difficult to access. It is only accessible by foot via an approximate 4 hour one-way hike suitable for advanced hikers only.

    What do FUDS look like?

    Roughly 9-square miles of present day El Malpais National Monument are considered a Formerly Used Defense Site, because of the land's use as the Kirtland Demolition Bombing Range during WW II.

    Los Angeles District Formerly Used Defense Sites program manager Jeff Armentrout speaks with a community member during a public meeting in Casa Grande, Arizona, Feb. 25.     KINGMAN, Ariz. - Workers excavate soil around a home Apr. 19 during cleanup work being done by the US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District at a Formerly Used Defense Site just outside Kingman, Ariz. The work being done by the District and its contractor, Eco & Associates, is part of the Time Critical Removal Action for the former Skeet Range, which is referred to as Munitions Response Site 03 of the former Kingman Ground-to-Ground Gunnery Range.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District team is moving along with its clean-up work at the Formerly Used Defense Site just outside of Kingman, Ariz. which began Apr. 15. The work being done by the district and its contractor is part of the time-critical removal action for the site, which is referred to as Munitions Response Site 03 of the former Kingman Ground-to-Ground Gunnery Range. The site was used as a skeet range for military training during World War II.

    Off-road fans are a force multiplier for FUDS program

    San Bernardino County is home to six off-highway vehicle recreation sites regulated by the Bureau of Land Management. That fact alone made the Glen Helen Raceway prime real-estate to discuss the 3Rs of Explosives Safety at Formerly Used Defense Sites during a Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series event Aug. 4-5.
