LOS ANGELES -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is hosting a public meeting to discuss a proposed remediation plan for the Dry Canyon Artillery Range Munitions Site 01 near Frazier Park, California.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Frazier Park Library, 3732 Park Dr.
The Dry Canyon Artillery Range Formerly Used Defense Site, or FUDS, comprises 16,984 acres of the Los Padres National Forest, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In 1942, the U.S. Army acquired about 2,880 acres to use as an artillery training range as part of the war effort. A flat, open area at the south entrance of Dry Canyon is believed to be the location of the military gun emplacements, with the firing range oriented northeast into the canyon.
The land was declared excess in 1952 and returned to the Department of Agriculture. The Corps’ Los Angeles District established the artillery range site as a FUDS property in 1994. Since that time, munitions debris, munitions and explosives of concern have been found within the former range, including artillery rounds, fuzes, projectiles and bullet casings.
The Dome Springs Campground is located in the northeastern Los Padres National Forest and within the former Dry Canyon Artillery Range site. The Corps’ Los Angeles District performed a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study of the site, which is now available for public comment and review.
The proposed plan addresses the preferred alternatives for remediating the potential munitions and explosives of concern from the area.
The public is invited to review and comment on the proposed plan during the public meeting, as well as during the public comment period, which is now to Sept. 19.

The Corps is the agency responsible for environmental remediation of properties that were formerly owned by, leased to or otherwise possessed by the Department of Defense and transferred from Department of Defense control prior to Oct. 17, 1986. This includes the Dry Canyon Range munitions response site.
