    Workers with American Integrated Services, Inc., a subcontractor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Time Critical Removal Action of a Formerly Used Defense Site just outside Kingman, rebuild a wall between two properties July 29 which was taken down during the “construction phase” of the cleanup project. The “construction phase” of the removal included providing temporary relocation assistance for residents and their pets while cleanup was being done from nearly 60 properties; removing the landscaping, rocks and other similarly mobile items on each affected property and storing them in a secure location while the team removes soil on the property up to a depth of two feet; and restoring removed items to their original location unless the property owners or residents asked for the items to remain off of the property.

    LA District completes cleanup project in Kingman

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District finished a major cleanup operation July 31 on the Time Critical Removal Action of a Formerly Used Defense Site just outside Kingman.     NELLIS AFB, Nev.--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Las Vegas Resident Office is between 75 and 85 percent complete on Phase I of the renovation project for the Mike O’Callaghan Medical Center here June 24.

    There’s a new $4M bridge being built here and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is overseeing its construction, which began March 30.The project will consist of constructing a two-span, I-girder concrete bridge, install associated road base and approach slabs, and placing grouted riprap both upstream and downstream of the project in the channel.
  • A member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s team inspects the potential alignment of the possible location of a diversion levee in Mount Charleston, Nev. during a mission to the area March 11. The District sent a team consisting of members from the Hydrology and Hydraulics, Design, Geotech and Regulatory branches to make an assessment of the danger to life and property to a community downhill from a fire-burned slope after receiving a request for assistance from representatives of the State of Nevada.

    LA District undertakes special mission to Nevada

    Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District undertook a different kind of mission recently when they went to Mount Charleston, Nev. Mar. 11 and 12. For the first time in more than a decade, the LA District received approval for “Advance Measures” technical and direct assistance for the State of Nevada.

    Col. Mark Toy, the Los Angeles District commander, presented Dr. Wen Chang with a command coin and a certificate which read in part, the District’s appreciation for Chang’s “outstanding leadership, dedication and technical expertise for the Asset Management, the Programs and Project Management, and the Planning Divisions and in the development of the FY14 Watershed-Based Budget Pilot Proposal for the Santa Ana River Watershed. Dr. Chang currently provides technical and budgeting support within the Natural Resources Management Program. His national perspective in all of these areas has been an invaluable asset to the District.”

    Visiting IWR economist departing District

    Dr. Wen-Huei Chang, a water resources economist from the Institute of Water Services, left the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Aug. 22 after working with three of the District’s divisions on temporary assignment for nearly five months.
  • LUKE AFB, Ariz. -- This artist’s rendering show what a proposed Squadron Operations building for the incoming F-35 squadrons at Luke AFB may look like when it is complete. The Air Force officially announced the base as the site of the Air Force's F-35A Lightning II pilot training center Aug. 1. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is scheduled to begin construction in Oct. 2012.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Arizona/Nevada Area Office’s Roadrunner Resident Office is preparing to award between $90 and $110 million in military construction and Operations and Maintenance work at Luke Air Force Base.

    LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District's Nellis Resident Office is working on an addition and improvement for the F-35 422 Evaluation Squadron Facility at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. The renovations will add a 16,000 square foot building and improve 4,000 square feet inside the existing facility.

    District keeps projects moving along in Las Vegas area

    LAS VEGAS – It’s been said that what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. However, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is working on military construction projects in and around the Las Vegas area that will have effects across the country and around the world. One project at Nellis Air Force Base is the addition and renovation at the 422 Test Evaluation Squadron building. “The project will add a 16,000 square feet facility and there will be renovation of 4,000 square feet of the existing building,” said Mark Porterfield, project engineer at the District’s Nellis Resident Office. “Construction began in early June and the project is due in March 2013”
  • LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District's Nellis Resident Office recently completed a solar panel project at the Bureau of Land Management's fire station at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas. The new photovoltaic system is capable of generating 40 KWAC to provide power for all the buildings on the facility.

    District brings “green” power to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

    LAS VEGAS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Nellis Resident Office recently completed a solar power project for the Bureau of Land Management at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. “The new photovoltaic system is capable of producing an average of 40 KWAC of electricity,” said Viet Q. Tran, project engineer at the Nellis office. “The calculated full load requirement to support the fire station is 38.6 KW; therefore, this solar system is designed to fully support the full load requirement.”

    WELLTON, Ariz. -- Team members from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol Station in Wellton, Ariz., Mar. 22. The station will serve more than 300 agents and support staff with more than 50,000 square feet or workspace, offices and space for meetings, training and detention.
