    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted retired employee Kelli Johnson into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 8 at the District headquarters in Los Angeles. The induction was in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day. Nearly three dozen retirees participated in the day's activities, which included a breakfast social, commander's update and catered lunch.

    USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations Maj. Gen. Scott Spellmon inducted South Pacific Division Regional Business Director John Moreno into the Senior Executive Service at a ceremony in the Los Angeles District Jan. 10. Moreno’s wife Joann, grandson Edward Lopez, and nephew Jonathan Ochoa participated in the presentation of the induction pin, reciting of the oath of office, and uncasing and unfurling of the flag of the Senior Executive Service. Moreno has more than 26 years of experience with the Corps and now provides executive leadership and direction for the South Pacific Division and its four subordinate Districts in operating as a Regional Business Center.

Kirk Gibbs, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, sign a partnering agreement July 5 in Los Angeles, California, to foster collaboration in a relationship that stresses the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as officials from the university and the Corps look on. The agreement also provides a road map to employment with the Corps through various programs, including the Pathways internship program.

    Corps, Cal State LA agree to partner for STEM education and careers

    The U.S Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District signed a partnering agreement with the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology at California State University, Los Angeles July 5. The agreement promises to enhance opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, education and career paths.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted two former employees into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 15 at the District headquarters. The two retirees had a combined total of 96 years of federal service, all with the Los Angeles District.

    A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Planning Associate paddles the Los Angeles River at Sepulveda Basin in Encino, California, July 20 as part of the Watershed Planning Course. The associates were students of the course that covered Integrated Water Resources Management principles, Corps watershed planning steps and stakeholder perspectives, with the Los Angeles River serving as the case study.

    The Los Angeles District hosted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Planning Associates Program's Watershed Planning Course here July 17-21. The course was designed to expose planners to the use of broad authorities to address any problem that deals with water resources.

  • The hydraulic cutter-head suction dredge H.R. Morris digs up sediment from the Channel Islands Harbor sand trap Feb. 14. Seattle-based Manson Construction, the Corps' contractor for the project, piped the material to nearby Hueneme Beach to replenish sand lost to erosion.

    RockForce Construction worker moves earth Oct. 7 in Leona Valley, California, to restore historic hydrology of Petersen Ranch. The restoration work is being conducted on the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank, a nearly 4000 acre restoration and protection project in northern Los Angeles County.

    Federal, state and local officials celebrated the grand opening Oct. 7 of the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank, an effort that will eventually restore about 4000 acres of native wetland habitat along the San Andreas Fault rift zone in the Leona Valley north of Los Angeles.

    Corps leader updates California maritime industry

    Despite a nearly $2 billion budget to maintain the nation's inland waterways and harbors, it simply isn't enough for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to meet all the maritime industry’s infrastructure needs, Maj. Gen. Ed Jackson told attendees at the winter meeting of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference held in Marina del Rey, California, Jan. 21.

    The Los Angeles District inducted Ruth Villalobos, the former chief of Planning Division who retired in 2008, into the District's Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees at a ceremony Feb. 19 in the District's Los Angeles headquarters. Villalobos is one of three former employees inducted in 2015.

The children, ranging in ages from 5 to 18 years old, took part in a variety of activities designed to expand opportunities and transform lives.
