    The LA River and the Corps: A brief history

    The Los Angeles River is regarded as an icon of LA’s sprawling hyperurbanization. To some, it’s nothing more than a part of the landscape that splits the concrete jungle in two. To others, it’s an eyesore; a resplendent piece of nature stunted in a tomb of steel and cement. But the 51-mile-long river wasn’t always a flood control channel.

    More than 80 second grade students from Cortez Elementary, a math and science magnet school in Pomona, Calif., took a field trip to Prado Dam May 16. The tour included a nearly two-mile trek through the flood control basin up to the dam's 627-foot control tower.

    A group of second graders from Cortez Elementary, a math and science magnet school in Pomona, Calif., toured Prado Dam as part of a larger effort to spark the interest of students in science, technology, engineering, and math May 16.
  • The dredging project deepened the federal channel north of Oceanside Pier and filled the beach adjacent to the pier with fresh, uncontaminated sand.

    Annual dredging project no small task for district

    As far as dredging projects go, the one conducted from mid to late April at Oceanside Harbor seems pretty simple. “The project entails dredging sand out of the federal navigation channel at Oceanside Harbor and placing it on a downcoast beach,” said Scott John, the project manager. “Sand accretes naturally in the harbor entrance and it needs to be dredged out on an annual basis.”

    Col. Mark Toy, the Los Angeles District commander, presented Dr. Wen Chang with a command coin and a certificate which read in part, the District’s appreciation for Chang’s “outstanding leadership, dedication and technical expertise for the Asset Management, the Programs and Project Management, and the Planning Divisions and in the development of the FY14 Watershed-Based Budget Pilot Proposal for the Santa Ana River Watershed. Dr. Chang currently provides technical and budgeting support within the Natural Resources Management Program. His national perspective in all of these areas has been an invaluable asset to the District.”

    Visiting IWR economist departing District

    Dr. Wen-Huei Chang, a water resources economist from the Institute of Water Services, left the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Aug. 22 after working with three of the District’s divisions on temporary assignment for nearly five months.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and URS Corporation have held ping pong leagues for several years and ultimately hold a championship tournament on the seventh-floor patio of their downtown Los Angeles office building. In the men’s division, it was an all-District final as ACE-IT contractor Bee Cha won three sets to one against David Coltharp (pictured) of the asset management division.

    Familiar faces vie for table tennis glory

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and URS Corporation have held ping pong leagues for several years and ultimately hold a championship tournament on the seventh-floor patio of their downtown Los Angeles office building.
