    ERDC Soldiers serve in the fight against COVID-19

    Although the vast majority of employees with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are Department of Defense civilians, the select few U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the ERDC are making a significant impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Soldiers from across the ERDC have deployed around the country to aid in the fight against the disease, many mobilizing to “hotspots” to confront the unique challenges of fighting an unseen enemy.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Park Ranger Mary Carmona secures the gate at the Deep Creek road entrance May 17. Vandals have continually cut the locks and removed the chains that secure that gate at several of the Corps Mojave River Dam basins entrances in the County of San Bernardino. The area also known as the “Deep Creek Spillway” is located on federal property and is restricted to authorized motor vehicles and personnel.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Pacific Border District awarded a $7.6 million contract modification April 15 to Fisher Sand & Gravel Co., Dickinson, North Dakota, for approximately 800 linear feet of border wall construction and associated infrastructure in Yuma, Arizona.

    Corps donates toiletries to women’s center in honor of King’s legacy

    LOS ANGELES – Shirley Craig, donations and inventory associate at the Downtown Women’s Center, smiled as she looked through the large cart full of toiletries. “I think this is wonderful,” she said. “The ladies are going to love these. They’re packed nicely, and they’ve got so many things in them.” The gallon-sized plastic bags Craig was referring to were full of necessary items a woman might need if she was going on a trip – socks, lotion, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, combs, toothbrushes, makeup and even packs of playing cards. However, these bags weren’t packed for a leisurely trip or vacation; they were going to the many Los Angeles women calling the center and the streets of Skid Row their temporary home. The truck bed full of toiletries was delivered to the center Jan. 23 by employees with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted retired employee Kelli Johnson into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 8 at the District headquarters in Los Angeles. The induction was in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day. Nearly three dozen retirees participated in the day's activities, which included a breakfast social, commander's update and catered lunch.

    District partners with Tohono O’odham Nation to promote explosives safety

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District partnered with the Environmental Protection Office of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a federally-recognized tribe, in November 2018 to plan age-appropriate 3Rs (Recognize, Retreat, Report) of Explosives Safety awareness information for schools on the nation located within the Sonoran Desert in south central Arizona.

    USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations Maj. Gen. Scott Spellmon inducted South Pacific Division Regional Business Director John Moreno into the Senior Executive Service at a ceremony in the Los Angeles District Jan. 10. Moreno’s wife Joann, grandson Edward Lopez, and nephew Jonathan Ochoa participated in the presentation of the induction pin, reciting of the oath of office, and uncasing and unfurling of the flag of the Senior Executive Service. Moreno has more than 26 years of experience with the Corps and now provides executive leadership and direction for the South Pacific Division and its four subordinate Districts in operating as a Regional Business Center.

    The City of Torrance honored the five branches of the military during the Torrance Armed Forces Day Celebration May 18 to 20. This year the honored service was the United States Marine Corps.

Former Executive Assistant Patsy Delgado and former Executive Secretary Jeanne Imamura were this year’s inductees. The induction was in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day. More than three dozen retirees participated in the day's activities, which included a breakfast social, commander's update and catered lunch.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted two former employees into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 15 at the District headquarters. The two retirees had a combined total of 96 years of federal service, all with the Los Angeles District.
