    Senior leaders, panel members engage students, engineers at HENAAC Conference

    With more than 32,000 employees working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worldwide, only about 1 percent of those are in uniform, said Col. Kirk Gibbs, Los Angeles District commander. That’s why the Hashtag, “No Camo Required,” seemed to be a fitting theme for the Corps’ seminar during the Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Awards Conference Oct. 18 to 22 in Pasadena.

    Corps takes public comment at Aliso Creek meeting

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, along with local sponsor Orange County Public Works, hosted a public meeting Oct. 17 to present the Aliso Creek Mainstem Ecosystem Restoration Study, describe the Tentatively Selected Plan and receive public input on the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report.

    Corps’ Los Angeles District celebrates end of fiscal year with more than $485M in contract awards

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District awarded about 960 contracts worth more than $485 million in fiscal year 2017.

    Upgrades to the refueling system at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, will increase the pumping capacity to 2,400 gallons per minute for 25 multi-aircraft revetments and six bomber outlets. Two new 420,000 gallon aboveground operating storage tanks will feed the system. During the hot summer months, nearly around the clock construction is overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District's Las Vegas Resident Office.

    The Los Angeles District hosted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Planning Associates Program's Watershed Planning Course here July 17-21. The course was designed to expose planners to the use of broad authorities to address any problem that deals with water resources.

    Division leaders tour Tijuana River Valley

    Los Angeles District kicked off Regional Meetings Week at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve on July 17, hosting senior leaders from throughout the South Pacific Division on a visit to Corps projects along the nation’s border with Mexico.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District begin a remedial investigation and feasibility study July 13 at the former Sahuarita Air Force Range in Pima County, Arizona. Kyle Lindsay, a geophysicist from the Sacramento District and Sara Benovic, a project manager with the State of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Federal Projects Team, discuss the RI/FS that will investigate more than 10,000 acres using digital geophysical mapping. Airmen from Davis-Monthan in Tucson used the site from 1943 to 1958 for bombing and gunnery training.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District began a remedial investigation and feasibility study July 13 at the former Sahuarita Air Force Range in Pima County, Arizona. SAFR is a Formerly Used Defense Site of approximately 27,000 acres. Airmen from Davis-Monthan in Tucson used the site from 1943 to 1958 for bombing and gunnery training.

    Workshops provide guidance for Prado Basin Master Plan update

    The Los Angeles District conducted two public workshops with local government agencies, residents and stakeholders on July 13 here at the Eastvale Community Center in order to seek input on existing and future land uses within the Prado Dam basin in support of the Master Plan update.

The parade is an official Department of Defense event and is the city's way of expressing respect and reverence for the personnel who served in the armed forces, according to the city's website. The city honored the men and women of our nation's military with a three-day celebration that began on Friday, May 19, and continued through Sunday, May 21. The parade highlighted this year's honored branch, the United States Air Force.

    Ribbon cutting for Aravaipa Veteran Firefighting Crew

    Fort Huachuca, Arizona, is home to the Bureau of Land Management's Aravaipa Veteran Firefighting Crew. Through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Installation Support mission, BLM signed a long-term agreement with the garrison.

    The dredge HR Morris maintains position at the Oceanside Harbor entrance channel as the annual navigation project begins. The dredge pumps sediment from the channel in order to maintain the authorized federal channel depth, with the added benefit of using the material to renourish Oceanside beaches.

    The annual dredging of the entrance channel at Oceanside Harbor began Monday afternoon when the dredge HR Morris began pumping the first of up to 300,000 cubic yards that will maintain safe navigation for vessels and provide much-needed renourishment for the city’s shoreline.
