    RockForce Construction worker moves earth Oct. 7 in Leona Valley, California, to restore historic hydrology of Petersen Ranch. The restoration work is being conducted on the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank, a nearly 4000 acre restoration and protection project in northern Los Angeles County.

    Corps participates in mitigation bank opening in north Los Angeles County

    Federal, state and local officials celebrated the grand opening Oct. 7 of the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank, an effort that will eventually restore about 4000 acres of native wetland habitat along the San Andreas Fault rift zone in the Leona Valley north of Los Angeles.

  • Hector Santiago, a project manager for the Environmental Remediation Branch, Planning, Programs and Project Management Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District, is a recipient of the 2016 STEM Hero Award. Santiago was recognized Oct. 6, by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation during their 28th annual conference in Anaheim, Calif.

    Silver Jackets comprise many agencies, one solution

    Los Angeles District Commander Col. Kirk Gibbs joined water resource agencies, led by the California Department of Water Resources, at a Sept. 9 signing ceremony here during the Floodplain Management Association’s annual conference to formally establish California as the 40th state to form a Silver Jackets program.
  • Capt. Park led the bridge design workshop using computer generated simulation. Middle school students were challenged to build a working bridge using the most cost effective means available.

    Maj. Scotty Autin, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District along with Capt. Eugene Park, assistant chief of civil works branch, participated in the West Point Leadership, Ethics, and Diversity STEM (LEADS) workshop for LA Metro Area educators and students on Sept. 9.

    Commander visits regional offices, projects

  • The Port of Los Angeles, along with its sister Port of Long Beach, is a critical facility for the nation's economy. One of the Corps' primary responsibilities is to ensure the safety of federal navigation channels at this and other ports throughout the nation.

    Senior leaders help kick off inaugural LA Fleet Week

    On August 30, the Defense Support of Civil Authorities senior leaders held a seminar for representatives of military branches to present their roles in a catastrophic incident that would draw upon the Authorities’ resources.

    This stone used in the initial construction of the Dana Point Harbor in 1966 held the time capsule which was opened at the harbor's 50th anniversary celebration held August 29. The large recreational harbor provides berths for about 2,500 small craft.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District place segmented sections of temporary protective barriers in the community of Cedar Creek, Arizona, Aug. 17. The project is in response to an Aug. 13 request by the White Mountain Apache Tribe to provide assistance to meet an imminent flood threat. Storm flows from the summer monsoon season, in concert with debris flows from the burned watershed upstream, pose a serious threat because limited flood risk minimization measures (K-rails) are currently in place.

    District adds temporary capacity to Cedar Creek flood fighting measures

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District dispatched personnel and resources Aug. 14 to assist the White Mountain Apache community with its limited flood risk minimization measures.

    District employee recognized for life's work

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District employee Steve Dwyer, chief, Navigation and Coastal Projects Branch, was honored in July by the Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers. They recognized Dwyer with the 2016 ASCE MLAB Lifetime Achievement in Civil Engineering award.

    Mike Langley, a senior project manager in the District's Regulatory Division, discusses two project alternatives described in the draft EIS that would require authorization under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act for the discharge of dredged or fill materials within waters of the U.S. The project is located within the boundary of the existing Safford Mine Facility, approximately 8 miles north of Safford.

    Corps discusses options for proposed Lone Star project

    The Safford Mine Facility is currently an open-pit copper mining operation consisting of two pits: the Dos Pobres Pit and the San Juan Pit. The applicant has designed the proposed Lone Star Project to make use of as much of the existing infrastructure as possible.

Two meetings were held for the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement on the Little Colorado River in Navajo County, Arizona. In 2008, the Federal Emergency Management Agency de-accredited the Winslow Levee.

    The Draft Integrated Feasibility Report evaluates several alternatives that reduce the risk of damages and reduce life, safety, and health risks caused by flooding of the Little Colorado River to the City of Winslow, surrounding community, and public and private infrastructure.

    LOS ANGELES – The City of Los Angeles and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District hosted a public meeting in the Balboa Sports Center, in Encino, California, May 10. The meeting provided additional information on the proposed AngelFest event, a three-day music and arts festival in Sepulveda Basin to be held in October 2017.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Arizona-Nevada Area Office hosted a Business Opportunities Open House March 17.
  • In March 2013, ASARCO LLC submitted a Section 404 permit application to the Corps to discharge fill materials into approximately 130 acres and indirectly impact an additional 4 acres of waters of the U.S., to construct a Tailings Storage Facility near Ray Mine, an existing open pit copper mine in Pinal County. The comment period for the Final Environmental Impact Statement will end on March 14.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District held a public meeting to present results of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Ray Mine Tailings Storage Facility Feb. 24.
