    Dutra Dredging Company of San Rafael, Calif., uses the clamshell dredge Paula Lee to place about 520,000 cubic yards of the sand into barges that tugs will then transport to the Port of Long Beach for its Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project. The remaining sand will be used to renourish a segment of Redondo Beach. This sand will be placed just offshore at Dockweiler State Beach and Redondo Beach.

    Marina del Rey channel dredging provides multiple benefits

    “In dredging, you don’t usually see the results, it’s just deeper water,” Andrew Hunt, the Dutra Dredging Company project manager for the Marina del Rey entrance channel dredging project, said Oct. 15 as the project ended. Standing atop nearly 75,000 cubic yards of clean sand the project placed on Redondo Beach, he continued, “I’m standing here looking at a beach we built. If we were here a month ago, I’d be standing in the surf zone.”

    Jo-Ellen Darcy, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, visited the Los Angeles District the week of Oct. 23, speaking to an international dredging conference, visiting or viewing several Los Angeles District civil works projects and meeting with local sponsors.

    Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District joined with exhibitors and vendors at the Tres Rios Nature and Earth Festival held Oct. 27 at the Base Meridian Wildlife Area. The festival celebrates the recreational and educational opportunities available in Phoenix's West Valley and throughout the area.
  • Lindsay Gordon, a pharmacy resident with the Los Angeles Medical Center, was the keynote speaker Oct. 24 for the Los Angeles District Special Emphasis Committee’s Disabilities Awareness Month program. Gordon’s topic was the alarming trend in Americans, especially our young people concerning diabetes.

    A private company donated funds to the non-profit group Friends of the LA River who, in turn, donated $970,000 to the city for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study.

  • PHOENIX - The Tres Rios Phase III Flow Regulating Wetlands, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, received the 2012 Crescordia award from the Valley Forward Association in the Site Development and Landscape: Public Sector category. As part of Phase III, the District removed invasive plants along the river in order to help bring back a riparian corridor populated by more native vegetation.

    The Tres Rios Phase III Flow Regulating Wetlands received the 2012 Crescordia award from the Valley Forward Association in the Site Development and Landscape: Public Sector category. The awards program is the benchmark in Phoenix for promoting livability, conserving natural resources and sustaining the valley's desert environment for future generations.

    USACE Environmental chief visits southern Arizona

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District hosted Dr. Christine Altendorf, the USACE Environmental Division chief during a two-day visit Aug. 29-30 to the southern Arizona area. Her visit focused on sustainable projects by the District and other agencies on and around military and federal properties.

The District is working on a plan to contact residents about a Time Critical Removal Action for the site which was used as a skeet range when the area was part of the Kingman Ground-to Gound Gunnery Range.

    District readies FUDS work for Kingman area

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is preparing for work at the Formerly Used Defense Site just outside of Kingman, Ariz. The District has approved the Time Critical Removal Action for the former Skeet Range, which is referred to as Munitions Response Site 03, of the former Kingman Ground-to-Ground Gunnery Range.

    If you see (Recognize) what you think is a military munition, a UXO, or piece of a munition, the most important thing to remember is do not touch it. Immediately get away (Retreat) from the area in the same direction from which you entered. Make sure to tell (Report) your concern about the suspect munition to an adult (a police officer, a teacher, a parent). The best thing to do is to call 911.

  • The Army Reserve Center project is in the "punch list" stage with safety officials, contractors and District project delivery teams making final inspections before furniture is installed and the customer takes possession in October. The ARC is the headquarters for the 79th Sustainment Support Command which was activated Dec. 1, 2009.

    Joint Forces Training Base home to energy-efficient headquarters

    Soldiers, family members and civilians of the 79th Sustainment Support Command will soon have a new headquarters, organizational maintenance area and acres of parking at the Joint Forces Training Base here. The work is all part of a nearly $25 million project managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.
  • During the graduation event, Leadership Development Program participants gave presentations for Col. Mark Toy, Los Angeles District Commander, and other senior leaders. Presentations ranged from proposed sponsorship packages so new employees would feel more welcomed into the District to a totally new way of distributing employees across the District to maximize productivity and increase quality of life.

    The City of Dana Point hosted its annual Emergency Preparedness Expo here Aug. 25 to educate the public about how to prepare for a disaster and to exhibit the assets provided by government agencies, public utilities and private organizations in the event one occurs.

Mark Toy, the Los Angeles District commander, presented Dr. Wen Chang with a command coin and a certificate which read in part, the District’s appreciation for Chang’s “outstanding leadership, dedication and technical expertise for the Asset Management, the Programs and Project Management, and the Planning Divisions and in the development of the FY14 Watershed-Based Budget Pilot Proposal for the Santa Ana River Watershed. Dr. Chang currently provides technical and budgeting support within the Natural Resources Management Program. His national perspective in all of these areas has been an invaluable asset to the District.”

    Dr. Wen-Huei Chang, a water resources economist from the Institute of Water Services, left the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Aug. 22 after working with three of the District’s divisions on temporary assignment for nearly five months.

    The third and final phase, anticipated to occur in the next five years, will construct an open water conveyance between the lagoon and the adjacent Marine Stadium Park, and the Pacific Ocean, to reestablish a more natural tidal flow.

    The material placed at Redondo Beach is part of a Corps project to remove about one million cubic yards of material from the Marina del Rey entrance channel in order to deepen the channel to its federally-authorized depth and improve safety for mariners and first responders who use the marina.
