    Former Los Angeles District commander reflects on 23 years since 9/11 recovery effort

    It was a Tuesday. Twenty-three years ago. The day of the week – not the date of the month – stands out the most for retired Col. Aaron Barta. Tuesday. A planned training day. A normal drive into work. By mid-morning, all of that would change. Tuesday would soon alter the course of Barta’s life and redefine the next 20 years of his Army career and the nation. It was Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. This is his story.

Tucked away in the quiet corridors of the 14th floor at 915 Wilshire, the LA District’s gym is a convenient and free resource for employees, even during work hours.

    PANACA, Nev. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District safety and emergency management experts join the Nevada State Park Rangers, the Lincoln County Fire Department, along with other federal and nonfederal agencies, to pose for a photo along the top of Matthews Canyon Dam, following an emergency training exercise June 25 in Lincoln County, Nevada.     Representatives from various city, state and federal agencies participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of Phase One of the San Clemente Beach Nourishment project May 31 in San Clemente, Calif. The project includes the construction of a 50-foot-wide beach fill along a 3,412-foot-long stretch of shoreline, using 251,000 cubic yards of compatible sediment.

    Corps, city celebrates San Clemente beach expansion

    The City of San Clemente hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of part of its expanded beach May 31 in San Clemente. The event occurred following the completion of Phase One of the San Clemente Beach Nourishment project, which aims to reduce coastal storm damage along the city’s shoreline.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District celebrated the completion of a beach nourishment project that benefits the Encinitas and Solana Beach communities during a joint press conference with its partners May 13 at Encinitas City Hall.

    The U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground’s primary mission is to test the nation’s military ground combat equipment; however, for nearly 30 years, its vast desert ranges also have been used by the Military Freefall School to train thousands of the military’s most elite paratroopers.
