    Officials cut the ribbon ceremonially marking the completion of the final phase of the Tucson Drainage Area/Arroyo Chico Multi-use Project at Tucson High School April 16. The $5 million segment was completed in 11 months and will greatly reduce flood risk for more than 1,000 residential, commercial and industrial structures with an assessed value of over $300 million.

    President's fiscal 2015 budget for Corps' Civil Works released

    The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2015 (FY15) includes $4.561 billion in gross discretionary funding for the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which is offset in part by a proposal to cancel $28 million in unobligated carryover of funding appropriated prior to fiscal year 2014.

    In WWII LA, no task was too tough for District

    Many people understand the engineer’s role in society. Among the definitions of engineer, the Oxford Dictionary lists one as “(verb) to skillfully or artfully arrange for an event or situation to occur.” This is certainly the definition most befitting of the myriad of challenging missions the Los Angeles District undertook in the days after Japanese forces bombed the Pearl Harbor Naval Air Base on Dec. 7, 1941.

    Cadet Mackenzie Vaughn, left, a senior at the U.S. Military Academy, and Cadet Chris Lillie, a junior with the University of Notre Dame's Reserve Officer's Training Corps program, completed a three-week-long internship with the Los Angeles District Aug. 8. The two shadowed engineer officers and district civilian professionals through a myriad of projects in order to gain experience and expose them to the inner workings of the Corps, its mission, and impact on society.

    Two future Army officers took advantage of a rare opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the inner-workings of the Corps of Engineers as part of a summer internship program, which they each successfully completed Aug. 8.

    The dredging project deepened the federal channel north of Oceanside Pier and filled the beach adjacent to the pier with fresh, uncontaminated sand.

    Annual dredging project no small task for district

    As far as dredging projects go, the one conducted from mid to late April at Oceanside Harbor seems pretty simple. “The project entails dredging sand out of the federal navigation channel at Oceanside Harbor and placing it on a downcoast beach,” said Scott John, the project manager. “Sand accretes naturally in the harbor entrance and it needs to be dredged out on an annual basis.”

    LA District team members brave the elements for annual Tres Rios Nature Festival

    Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Arizona/Nevada Area Office joined with exhibitors and vendors at the annual Tres Rios Nature and Earth Festival held Mar. 9 and 10 at the Baseline and Meridian Wildlife Area near the Phoenix International Raceway. District team members talked with members of the public about projects across the Valley, the state and the LA District, which covers Southern California, all of Arizona, and portions of Nevada and Utah. One of the major local projects the team discussed was the Tres Rios Environmental Restoration Project.

    FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District completed construction on a new bridge across Thorpe Rd which more than triples the flow capacity in the area. The "classic-looking" bridge project also contains retaining walls and the wing walls with a malapai rock veneer to provide aesthetic enhancement to the flood risk management project.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District put the finishing touches on the bridge across Thorpe Road over the Rio de Flag in Flagstaff, Ariz. and reopened the thoroughfare to complete the project in December.
