    USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations Maj. Gen. Scott Spellmon inducted South Pacific Division Regional Business Director John Moreno into the Senior Executive Service at a ceremony in the Los Angeles District Jan. 10. Moreno’s wife Joann, grandson Edward Lopez, and nephew Jonathan Ochoa participated in the presentation of the induction pin, reciting of the oath of office, and uncasing and unfurling of the flag of the Senior Executive Service. Moreno has more than 26 years of experience with the Corps and now provides executive leadership and direction for the South Pacific Division and its four subordinate Districts in operating as a Regional Business Center.

    Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commanders helped break ground on new medical facilities on Veterans Day at the Tibor Rubin Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach.

    Los Angeles District VA Program Manager Bob Klein and VA San Diego Healthcare System Medical Center Project Manager Jenn Rivo provided a tour and project update to USACE Deputy Director of Military Programs Brig. Gen. Glenn Goddard and USACE South Pacific Division Commander Col. Kim Colloton. This project will deliver a new Spinal Cord Injury Center consisting of 50 private inpatient rooms, three new clinics and an 800 car parking garage for the VA to continue providing the best healthcare to the Nation's veterans.

    The City of Torrance honored the five branches of the military during the Torrance Armed Forces Day Celebration May 18 to 20. This year the honored service was the United States Marine Corps.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted two retired employees into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 15 at the District headquarters in Los Angeles. Former Executive Assistant Patsy Delgado and former Executive Secretary Jeanne Imamura were this year’s inductees. The induction was in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day. More than three dozen retirees participated in the day's activities, which included a breakfast social, commander's update and catered lunch.

    District inducts two into distinguished employee cadre

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted two former employees into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 15 at the District headquarters. The two retirees had a combined total of 96 years of federal service, all with the Los Angeles District.

    Corps completes Fort Irwin water treatment plant

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District place segmented sections of temporary protective barriers in the community of Cedar Creek, Arizona, Aug. 17. The project is in response to an Aug. 13 request by the White Mountain Apache Tribe to provide assistance to meet an imminent flood threat. Storm flows from the summer monsoon season, in concert with debris flows from the burned watershed upstream, pose a serious threat because limited flood risk minimization measures (K-rails) are currently in place.

    District adds temporary capacity to Cedar Creek flood fighting measures

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District dispatched personnel and resources Aug. 14 to assist the White Mountain Apache community with its limited flood risk minimization measures.

    The phase separator of the mechanical evaporator located on the right of side of the photo is the third stage of the purification process. The project is the design-build of a six million gallon per day water treatment plant. The new plant will use a three-stage, electro-dialysis reversal (EDR) water treatment plant that treats all contaminants found in Fort Irwin's ground water in accordance with federal and state requirements. The plant will include: an electro-dialysis reversal (EDR) primary treatment, lime softening clarifiers, lime solids thickeners, lime sludge lagoons, reverse osmosis (RO) filters, brine treatment facility, concentrate equalization basins and a mechanical evaporator tower and feed tank, and three evaporation ponds to achieve the post’s 99 percent water recovery rate. The project also includes water system improvement and supporting utilities and infrastructure upgrades

    Fort Irwin water treatment plant reaches construction milestone

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Corps contractor CDM Constructors, Inc., of Rancho Cucamonga have reached a critical milestone in the construction of the new Fort Irwin Water Treatment Plant as it began to transition to the plants commissioning phase in September.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District recognized Carlos Gomez, an administrative assistant who works in the Programs and Project Management Division, during this month’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month observance. Although Gomez sustained life-changing injuries resulting in his disability, he continues to exceed his personal expectations and physical limitations. “I drive still, I cross country ski, I’m certified as an advanced underwater scuba diver. Rock climbing, mountain biking, zip lining; you name it, I will do it,” Gomez said. “There is nothing I can’t do and I will continue to push harder with a prosthetic leg.”

  • The hydraulic cutter-head suction dredge H.R. Morris digs up sediment from the Channel Islands Harbor entrance Oct. 14. Seattle-based Manson Construction, the Corps' contractor for the $4.3 million project, will pipe the material to nearby Hueneme Beach to replenish sand lost to erosion.
