Position 5 And 6: Nogales Wash Emergency Flood Fight

Published Aug. 4, 2017
LOCATION: The proposed action is located within the vicinity of Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona.

PROPOSED PROJECT: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposes to undertake flood fights at two locations hereby termed Position 5 and Position 6:

  • P5: Proposed work at P5 entails bank stabilization of the west bank of Nogales Creek near Marten Road at approximately 31°24'13.50'' N and 110°57'20.74'' W, where severe erosion of the bank threatens existing houses. The slope would be stabilized using a 2:1 grouted rock slope, approximately 18 ft. tall and approximately 1200 ft. in length. An 18-inch bedding layer and 4 ft. grouted toe would underlie the slope.
  • P6: Proposed work at P6 entails stabilization of the east bank of Nogales Creek around 1500 ft. north of P5 at approximately 31°24'32.07'' W and 110°57'29.48'' W, where severe erosion of the bank threatens nearby facilities. The slope would be stabilized in similar fashion to P5, using a 2:1 grouted rock slope approximately 500 ft. in length, underlain with an 18-inch bedding layer and 4 ft. grouted toe.

The proposed action is expected to be underway starting today, August 4, 2017.

BACKGROUND AND AUTHORITY: Recent flows from summer monsoon rains have eroded embankments at a number of locations within Nogales Wash, exposing and threatening critical infrastructure and property in and within the vicinity of Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Additional flows from monsoon rains occurred on 28 July and are expected to continue through early August, 2017. In response, Gov. Ducey of Arizona requested emergency flood fight assistance from the Corps. The Corps is authorized under Public Law 84-99 (33 United States Code §701n) to undertake emergency operations and provide flood fight assistance.
