  • USACE to host town hall to discuss Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project April 16 in Pico Rivera

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in collaboration with the City of Pico Rivera, will be hosting a town hall to discuss Whittier Narrows Dam and its upcoming safety project. The town hall is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. April 16 at the Main Auditorium at Pico Park, 9528 Beverly Blvd., Pico Rivera.
  • USACE awards construction contract for Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District awarded the construction phase of a contract March 23 to Barnard Construction Company, Inc., headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, for the Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project. The more than $735-million contract enables USACE and Barnard to complete construction of critical safety improvements to Whittier Narrows Dam – a high-risk dam that helps manage flood risk for more than 1 million people and $200 billion in property between the dam and the Pacific Ocean.
  • LA District, California Army National Guard to conduct flood-fighting demonstration Oct. 8 at Whittier Narrows Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and the California National Guard are partnering to conduct a Super Sand Bag Placement functional exercise at the Whittier Narrows Dam in Montebello, California. The exercise will include the use of a U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter flown by a crew with the California National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility No. 1, based in Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. The California National Guard will conduct a sling-load operation that will place sandbags into a simulated breach of the levee system at Whittier Narrows Dam to demonstrate the joint flood-fighting capabilities of the Corps and the California National Guard.
  • Whittier Narrows dam modification study complete, moves into design phase

    A highly anticipated modification study of a Southern California dam has been finalized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is now in the project’s design phase. The Whittier Narrows Dam Safety Modification Study was completed in June 2019 and approved by the Corps’ Headquarters in August. The design phase of the project began in October.

  • Army Corps to hold environmental impact scoping meeting on potential Whittier Narrows Dam modifications

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District will hold a public meeting for the Whittier Narrows Dam Safety Modification Study and Environmental Impact Statement on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., at the Pico Rivera Golf Course Clubhouse, 3260 Fairway Dr., Pico Rivera, 90660.
